May’s sock of the month has completely gone off the rails. This is it:
The first problem would be that this is maybe an eighth of a sock, and there are two socks in a pair. It is also the 25th of May, which means making the end of the month deadline is nothing but a distant dream at this point. I am so far away from a pair of socks that I may as well be knitting backwards.
Which I will be doing in a moment, because the second glaring problem is that they are just a leetle too big. Quite the understatement, really. They are enormous. I am blessed that the men in my family have rather regular sized feet, and a properly fitting sock really shouldn’t accommodate both of mine.
Sigh.
It is not the pattern’s fault – it is lovely and engaging and I both checked my gauge and followed the directions without veering off into some wild flights of knitting fancy. Even though I soon began to suspect the sock was looking a little on the big side, I kept going.
And going.
Finally, faced with the sad fact that this sock was looking distinctly on the large side, I unceremoniously grabbed Mr. Man’s foot and tried it on. Oddly enough, it was too big. I reread the pattern and checked my stitches – I was following the pattern correctly and getting the right gauge, so that wasn’t the problem. Then I went back and checked how many stitches I usually cast on for a man’s sock and noticed a distinct discrepancy. I was most certainly knitting the wrong size for my non sasquatch sized recipient. That is when reality struck:
I was going to have to start over.
Instead of giving myself a little pep talk, taking a deep breath and undoing my hours of work I decided to go with option B. Option B is also known as pitching a little fit, dumping the offending sock into the knitting basket and pulling out this:
“This” would be a baby dress I started way back in October of last year. It was abandoned when I realized that the baby in question would grow far faster than my ability to knit an entire dress out of sock yarn. Luckily, when you reach a certain age babies are like trains and there is always another one coming along. A new baby arrived recently and the dress is close enough to done that I should be able to finish it before she starts college.
Probably, anyways.

That ginormous unisock made me laugh
It was certainly ginormous! It is back to regular size now, after a mighty ripping back.
That sock is hilarious! I love the colour of the baby dress
